In case you missed it in 2007, Congress passed a bill to phase out incandescent light bulbs by having up to 35% more efficient bulbs by 2012 to 2014. The world of indandescent bulbs will soon be a thing of the past with incandescent bulbs literally being banned from the market.

CFLs are constructed of glass tubing and contain a small amount of mercury. The glass being fragile and if fractured exposes mercury, a potent neurotoxin. Thousands, perhaps millions of CFLs are in use. At the end of life, the twisted glass is more fragile than when new and more likely to break when the CFL is removed from the light fixture.

In Florida where hurricanes are frequent and power is out for as much as a week, many people have generators so that they can keep the refrigerator, radio, TV (if cable) and lights running. Since one 60 watt conventional bulb can be replaced with 7 - 8 A19 LED bulbs (with only 7.5 watts of power), they would be much in demand. The whole house could pretty much be lighted as normal. Since the LED bulbs are 120 volt, there is no need to change anything.
